Materials Needed

  • Fabric (preferably a lightweight cotton⁢ or linen blend)
  • Elastic band
  • Thread (matching color)
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Measuring tape
  • Iron
  • Sewing machine

Instructions

Follow these step-by-step instructions to sew your ⁤own fabric pleated skirt:

  1. Measure your waist and hips to determine the required ⁣fabric length and width. Add‌ a few inches for seam⁣ allowances and ⁤ease.
  2. Cut the‍ fabric into two identical rectangles with the determined ‌measurements.
  3. On one of the rectangles, fold and press a narrow hem along one of the shorter sides. This will ⁣be ‌the top edge of‍ the skirt.
  4. Next, mark the ⁤pleats. Divide the remaining length of the rectangle into four equal‍ sections, then fold each section in a way that the ⁣fabric overlaps and forms a pleat. Secure the pleats with pins.
  5. Sew ⁣along the‌ top edge to secure the pleats in place, removing the pins as you go.
  6. With right sides together, sew the two rectangles together along the side seams, leaving an opening at the top for the elastic band to pass through.
  7. Measure⁢ the elastic band around ‌your waist and cut it to the ⁣appropriate length.⁢ Attach a safety pin to one end of the band and pass it through the opening, threading it through the entire waistband casing.
  8. Overlap the ends of the elastic band and sew them together securely.
  9. Closing the opening, sew ‌the remaining seam to‍ enclose the elastic band.
  10. Finally, hem the bottom edge⁣ of the skirt by folding and pressing a narrow hem, then sewing it in place.
