Instructions
Follow these step-by-step instructions to sew your own fabric pleated skirt:
- Measure your waist and hips to determine the required fabric length and width. Add a few inches for seam allowances and ease.
- Cut the fabric into two identical rectangles with the determined measurements.
- On one of the rectangles, fold and press a narrow hem along one of the shorter sides. This will be the top edge of the skirt.
- Next, mark the pleats. Divide the remaining length of the rectangle into four equal sections, then fold each section in a way that the fabric overlaps and forms a pleat. Secure the pleats with pins.
- Sew along the top edge to secure the pleats in place, removing the pins as you go.
- With right sides together, sew the two rectangles together along the side seams, leaving an opening at the top for the elastic band to pass through.
- Measure the elastic band around your waist and cut it to the appropriate length. Attach a safety pin to one end of the band and pass it through the opening, threading it through the entire waistband casing.
- Overlap the ends of the elastic band and sew them together securely.
- Closing the opening, sew the remaining seam to enclose the elastic band.
- Finally, hem the bottom edge of the skirt by folding and pressing a narrow hem, then sewing it in place.
